Educators and activists to gather for Civic Studies, Civic Practices Conference

From Friday July 23 to Saturday July 24, educators and civic engagement activists will attend the Civic Studies, Civic Practices Conference at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. Students, scholars, and others interested in discussing this year’s conference topic are also invited to attend.

This conference will conclude the 2nd annual Summer Institute of Civic Studies, which began on July 12. Advanced graduate students, faculty, and practitioners from various fields of study are attending the two-week interdisciplinary seminar to talk about the role of civics in the world.
At the interactive sessions for the conference, participants will discuss “citizenship” as creativity, agency, and collaboration, rather than an exclusive “form of membership that separates those who are in from those who are out.” Session topics will include
  • Enabling Citizen Interaction through Web 2.0: Challenges and Opportunities
  • Exploring the Meaning of News Media Literacy for Civic Engagement: A Workshop on Civic Education
  • Activist Civic Engagement & Service Learning Among Marginalized Youth
  • Civic Education and Election Campaign Participation
